UPDATE: Just thought I’d add in this update about the vinyl version of this release, as I thought it was a nice touch. This is taken directly from the De La Soul e-mail I was sent:
What’s up y’all! We are happy to announce the release of the limited edition vinyl of “Smell The Da.I.S.Y.” in-stores 4/18. The vinyl will be a all instrumental version of the “Smell The Da.I.S.Y.” project. It contains 12 tracks that include all 11 of the “Smell The Da.I.S.Y.” instrumentals plus one exclusive never heard before J Dilla beat.
We decided to release a all instrumental version of “Smell The Da.I.S.Y.” to give people the experience of a J Dilla beat tape that we were so lucky to receive. These beat tapes were the springboard that generated creation and generated inspiration for us.
The vinyl release is very, very limited, only 100 copies will be released to stores to resemble the limited amount of beat tapes that Dilla would send out to artists like Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Busta, and De La.
Dilla was a heavy crate digger that scoured the earth digging for exclusive vinyl to sample, and if you want this vinyl project you’ll have to dig the same. We are not releasing the record store information so if you would like to find a copy go to our website for clues.
Have a good weekend, happy digging!
Original Post (31/3/14):
If I’m not mistaken it was probably De La Soul which first got me into Hip Hop.. I can remember listening to 3 feet high and Rising on heavy rotation, which was released way back in 1989, and still cuts it today as a brilliant album. Recently De La Soul released all their back catalog of albums for free download on Valentine, which was nice.. so anybody who has yet to discover them..there is no excuse.
A couple of days ago De La Soul also made available a mix tape..which is great news for De La Soul fans and also for fans of the hip-hop legend J Dilla, who died in 2006, and most will probably fall into both categories like myself. If you don’t know about J Dilla then take yourself to these mixes by Dj Rags: (J Dilla Tribute mix / J Dilla Changed my Life)
De La Soul wrote the following to announce the Mixtape’s release:
“We’re happy to announce the release of our brand new mixtape fully produced by the late great J Dilla called “Smell The Da.I.S.Y. (Da Inner Soul of Yancy). The mixtape consists of 11 songs of classic De La vocals over unreleased J Dilla production.
With this project we just wanted to be creative. Dilla was always our muse for creativity. He was always that springboard, that person, that individual, that sound, that generated creation, generated inspiration. He meant a lot to us and to Hip-Hop as a whole. Download “Smell The Da.I.S.Y.” for FREE now.”
